History of St. Mary (Immaculate Conceptions) Parish at Glenmore
In 1850, the Catholic people did not have a special house for divine services. They attended the De Pere church. Often, especially during the wet seasons of the year, they would carry their shoes and stockings in order to wade through the watery swamps which they met on their way. The old and infirm could not walk the distance, and the oxcart was a tedious vehicle in this wooded land. Missionaries would frequently visit these people. The families of this territory would take their turn in getting the priest from the city of De Pere. This, all the faithful had the opportunity to receive the Sacraments, and attend Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, which was celebrated in their homes. In the year 1850, the first Holy Mass was offered in this vicinity and took place in the home of Mr. James O'Leary. The James O'Leary farm was about 1/4 mile east of the present-day church of St. Mary Glenmore. James Heffernan and Denis Murphy were also prominent Catholics among the early settlers.
The First Church Building was in 1874. The Very Reverend Edward Daems V.G., Administrator of the Green Bay Diocese, granted the petition of the people of the town of Glenmore to build a church building. It was a large frame edifice. The members of the parish were the people of various nationalities. Those of the Irish and Polish extraction were in the majority.
The First Rectory Built in 1878. The priest's home was built in 1878 by Father Abb. The work of the building commenced on June 15, 1878 and it was blessed on August 28, 1848. On October 1, 1979 Father Agusut Gardhaus assumed the pastorate of Glenmore. He was later appointed assistant pastor at the Cathedral in Green Bay. On August 1, 1880, Father Herman Armin Jaspers became pastor. During his pastorate, a cellar was built under the rectory. He remained until 1884. In 1885, the Polish people who lived in the vicinity of Pine Grove, and due to their large number, decided to build a church within their settlement. Pine Grove was at one time called New Denmark. Through this development the numbers of members at the Glenmore parish diminished greatly.
The Second (1886), Third (1909), and Fourth (1940) Church. On account of its badly constructed foundation, St. Mary church was considered unsafe. It was razed in 1886. In that year, a beautiful new church was begun and completed in 1884. And again in just 22 years later, a new church had to be built due to a bad foundation. On June 18, 1940 at 3:00 a.m., the Glenmore church was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. Arrangements were made to use the Glenmore Town Hall as a temporary church until a new one could be built. On June 30 construction began on the church we have standing today.
